is still in use, and over 20,000 names from 1907 to 2005.

book and page it is on and a copy of the Marriage License can be
bought from the Coal County Genealogical Society.

Moore Cemetery
Debra West and Wanda Carter have finished photographing the
headstones in Moore Cemetery!
This was a large project and we really appreciate these ladies
bringing the information up to date and sharing it with us.
I have the names and dates off the headstones online.

On your next visit to Coalgate be sure to stop in and visit the
Coal County Mining and Historical Museum.
They are located at 212 S. Broadway
Hours: ?

I'll write more after my first visit and let you know what kind of information they have gathered. Happy Delsigne and Virginia Townsend have told me of gathering old books of records from the dump back in the 1960's after being discarded. These ladies and several others worked very hard to save these records so I think it's time we told everyone what they saved. It might be just what we are looking for.

Happy also did a lot of Cemetery recording back in the 1960's with her children and all her work is at the Museum. I'll be checking those out while I am there too.

History Of Coal County

Coal County is in southeastern Oklahoma created at statehood,
and was formed from part of Tobucksy County, Choctaw, Choctaw Nation in 1907.
It took its name from the County's chief economic product. Lehigh was the county seat.
The county seat was moved to Coalgate July 11, 1908.

The principal industries in Coal County in the early 1900's
were coal mining, agriculture - mainly cotton, and cattle production.

The earliest mines were located in Lehigh. In 1889, work started on Mine No. 1 in Liddle.
The name was changed to Coalgate in 1890, and Coalgate was incorporated as a city in 1898.
That same year, Slope Mine No. 2 was opened in Cottonwood.

The county courthouse and jail were completed in 1911. main street was bricked in 1913.
Coal remained the major industry until the end of WWII. The last coal mine was sealed on August 14, 1958.

Coal County today is primarily a cattle growing region. Oil and natural gas is still produced in the area.

Planning a trip to Coalgate?

In September 2001, I went to Coalgate and ate at the Brandin' Iron Cafe.
At the cash register they had a map of Coal County that cost $2.00
It lists businesses and has a list of Cemeteries and their locations marked on the map,
road names and more.
This is an Official Publication Of Coal County Chamber of Commerce at 580-927-2119
Produced by Master Map and Publishing Co.
